Blakeman’s Gas Service began on January 1, 1953, when Fred & Frances Blakeman purchased propane assets from Floyd Bond in Moorcroft, Wyoming. That original purchase included one 956-gallon black, Sivalls & Bryson propane tank (now retired and still located in the Moorcroft yard), a small pump, a Fairbanks scale, and 104 one-hundred-pound cylinders. From these days of small beginnings, Fred and Frances established a business built on dedication, integrity, and a strong commitment to serving their community. These rooted values have remained throughout decades and continue to guide the legacy of Blakeman Propane to this day.
In 1961, ownership passed to their son Kenny Blakeman and his wife Fern, who continued to grow the company while serving residential, oilfield, agricultural, and local commercial customers throughout the region. During this time, Blakeman’s Gas Service strengthened its reputation for reliability and dedication to service.
Kenny owned and operated Blakeman’s Gas Service until January 1980, when he sold the company to Randy & Rebecca Blakeman. With this transition, the company was incorporated as Blakeman Propane Inc., and Randy assumed the leadership role at this time. While focusing on expanding larger into the oil field and commercial markets, Randy & Rebecca remained committed to keeping residential customers at the heart of the business.
In 1975, Randy Blakeman had already begun driving truck and delivering propane, learning the business from the ground up in all areas. Blakeman Propane operated out of a small office on the west side of Powder River Avenue behind the Cozy Motel in Moorcroft. In 1986, property was purchased from the Burlington Northern Railroad on the west edge of town. A double-wide mobile home served as the office, and propane storage facilities were developed at this location. Over time, this same site evolved into what is now the corporate headquarters of Blakeman Propane, reflecting the company’s steady growth and long-term vision.
Steve Blakeman became a truck driver in 1981 alongside Randy. He would later assume many other roles within Blakeman Propane, later becoming the General Manager in 2005. Steve went on to work for the company for 44 years, retiring in March 2026.
In December of 2020, Randy & Rebecca’s three daughters, Jamye, Heidi, and Brooke became shareholders, marking the fourth generation of family involvement and reinforcing the company’s commitment to family ownership and long-term stewardship.
Since 1980, Blakeman Propane has grown from one plant with three employees to ten plants with approximately 80 employees and more than 300 million gallons of delivered propane since 1953 and still going strong.
